The DREAMS Digital EMS project envisions quality interaction between EMS (Emergency Medical Service) ambulance personnel and physician(s) at the hospital of their choice while out on a call or bringing a patient to a hospital. Such an environment is naturally multimedia, combining patient telemetry, interactive audio and video. Using IP as the network protocol instead of another proprietary system offers wider choices of link layers and better interoperability; however, it also opens up the well-known problems of time-sensitive applications over best-effort networks. This talk will explore the extra requirements for QoS implementation in a bandwidth-constrained (wireless) and traffic-prioritized environment.
